Tips for wedding guest dress attire:

1. Check the wedding invitation for clues.

You are invited to a wedding but aren’t quite sure what to wear. You’ve received an invitation in the mail and the excitement (or dread is building). One way to determine the style of the wedding is to check the invitation. The invitation is key to understanding what type of wedding dress code is expected.

If you are lucky, the invitation will tell you the dress code. Look for Black tie dress code or white tie event. If the dress code isn’t listed check to see where the wedding will be held. Is this a beach wedding, or at formal event center. Is the wedding at a rustic hall or a ballroom. These are all clues that you can use to decide on what to wear to a wedding.

2. Ask the bride or a member of the wedding party

Another great way to find out what the wedding guest attire is, is to ask a member of the wedding party or the bride. In the past I have asked a bridesmaid what the color of their dresses were so that I would not show up matching them. Showing up dresses in the same color as the bridesmaids isn’t the end of the world but unless you want to look like part of the wedding party but aren’t, it is good to avoid.

If you do find out what the colors are and find a dress to coordinate with those colors would be acceptable in a complementary way. For example, If the bridesmaids dresses are a lavender color than wearing a dress that has lavender accents would be acceptable.

3. When all else fails wear neutrals

Ah neutrals, a fan favorite for sure. Did you know that the majority of my closet is colorful? I recently had to add a few basics and neutrals to my closet. You can see more about it here in this post about wardrobe staples. When you have exhausted all of the options above and you still are unsure what to wear as wedding guest, then opt for a neutral colored dress. Tans, beige, navy, and black are all great color options.

Summer wedding guest dresses for women

Summer is such a popular time for weddings. If you live anywhere south you know summer means scorching heat. Hello from Texas! Wearing a sleeveless dress would be acceptable for most summer weddings. The one below has adjustable ties and is so chic! This photo shoot reminds me of a Ralph Lauren photo shoot.

Formal Wedding Guest Dresses

Formal wedding guest dresses are so fun to wear! They have so many options and styles to choose from. Here are a few options for formal wedding guest attire. Formal wedding guest dresses are usually maxi dress length. They tend to be more costly, but these dresses below are all under $100. The watercolor blue floral print dress is very pretty. It is lined and comes with an adjustable tie.

Beach Wedding Guest Dress Outfit

If you’ve been invited to a beach wedding and don’t know what to wear, here are some tips. Just because you are invited to wedding on the beach don’t mean you should come in a tank top and flip flops. For beach weddings you would want to wear sundresses, linen dresses, or maxi dresses. These are all great wedding guest dresses to wear for a beach wedding. Since beaches tend to be warmer and more windy, keep this in mind. One thing that annoys me when I wear dresses to our local beach Galveston, is if I wear a shorter dress like the one in the picture below, the wind tends to blow the dress up. Tip: Wear a pair of shorts under shorter dresses. You’ll thank me later.

As for shoes, unless it is stated on the invitation that you can wear flip flops, I would leave them at home. Think of wedges or cute sandals that you don’t mind getting sandy. Flats would also be a great option.

Sunday Best Wedding Guest Dresses

These next two dresses were gifted to me from Petal and Pup, an Australian based boutique that ships to the United States. They have so many cute outfits at great prices! They have new drops frequently as well. I picked this cute set for the gingham print. Gingham patterns are a spring and summer staple. Generally, you see plaids in fall and gingham in summer at stores.

What I love about this set is that it is sold separately. They can also be worn other ways as well. Pair the top with your favorite pair of jeans, skirts, and shorts. You can pair the skirt with bodysuits, cropped tops, or a basic tee. Its the wedding guest dress that keeps on giving!

Puffy sleeves have been trending right now, mixed with the gingham make this outfit Gen Z approved lol.. maybe.

Outfit details:

  • Puffy sleeves ruched at the wrist
  • Can be worn off the shoulder as well
  • The midsection of the top is ruched
  • Tiered ruffles on the skirt
  • The skirt is lined
  • The skirt has an elastic waist

Midi dresses are a great option for summer weddings

Midi dresses are a great option for a summer wedding guest dress. This one flows well, the empire waist makes this good option for pregnant women as well. The back has a beautiful tie and the thick shoulder straps give the dress a chic look.

Unfortunately, this style is currently sold out on the Petal and Pup website, but I have linked a few other options that are pretty wedding guest dresses.

Gingham Maxi dress style

I recently did a poll on Instagram, and many females in my audience love to wear maxi dress in the summer. I saw this dress on amazon and had to get it. I’ve been a little gingham obsessed this summer. This dress is a good option for the price BUT I will say in direct sunlight it is see through you can see in my picture below, my legs are noticeable. That being said I would wear a slip or a pair of cotton shorts underneath if you plan on wearing this to a wedding during the day. I think it would be fine to wear for a nighttime wedding.

The dress itself is good quality. It is ruched in the bust area. I love the tiers and the off the shoulder details. I wish it was lined but it doesn’t bother me so much especially since I own these shorts to wear underneath.

Final thoughts

Summer marks the beginning of wedding season, the weather is warmer and the options are endless. As mentioned above, if you are uncertain what the wedding dress code is you can ask a member of the bridal party or get clues from the invitation. Check to see where the wedding is being held at and go from there. Floral prints, gingham, and neutrals are always great options for summer. I have linked all of the dresses above and a few others as well below. Have a great time at the wedding!
