Flu prevention for kids

It’s that time of year again, dreaded Flu and cold season.  These are some of the ways that I prevent the flu. Surprisingly, it doesn’t include the Flu shot. Flu prevention is the best way to get ahead of the sickness before it is too late.

At the beginning of this year I contracted the flu and it was the worst! I have to mention that we were not taking our elderberry syrup daily.

First off I would like to say that I am not a medical professional, so use this at your own discretion. These are merely the practices that work for me

Last year when the Flu seemed to be close to epidemic status, we didn’t catch it. There were plenty of friends and family that did though.

These were the procedures  that I put into place.

Elderberry Syrup

This is the most effective way that I keep my kid flu free. I don’t know all of the logistics about it but I do know this, IT WORKS! Anytime, my kids are getting the sniffles, it’s because I ran out of Elderberry Syrup and I haven’t made any more.

I make my own too! It is so easy and way cheaper than buying it pre-made or buying gummy’s. I don’t have a blog post about it yet but one is in the making. These are the dried berries that I buy.

I use the dried berries and boil them and then strain and add a lot of honey and that is it. This is my best Flu prevention strategy.

If making your own is not your thing no worries, there are so many different natural brands that have pre-made mixtures. Zarbees is one of our favorite, it comes in gummy form. There is also a brand called Wellements that also has an elderberry syrup.

Hand Washing

You’ve heard it a million times and here it is once more. Hand washing is so important and more effective than hand sanitizer.

Don’t get me wrong, after we leave a playground or any place that has lots of kids, hand sanitizer is my go to. Once we are home it’s straight to hand washing. One of the best flu preventing strategies.

Every time the kids stay at childcare whether at church, the gym or even playing on a playground, we use hand sanitizer to clean our hands immediately, then when we are able to we wash our hands.

Vitamins

In my household we take our vitamins everyday.. when I don’t forget, mom brain. I usually give them different kinds ranging from gummy to flinstones. During the winter months we also like to take vitamin C gummies too.

Oranges

God is so good to provide us with what we need to take care of our bodies. We stock up on oranges like nobodies business. Our favorite ones are the cuties or clementines. They are a cute, delicious, and portable snack.

These some of the ways that we actively prevent the flu and sniffles in our house. It proved to be effective for us last year. We did end up catching a stomach bug TWICE though. I guess you can’t win them all.
