In a world of social distancing our time at the Getaway House met all of our needs for wanderlust and desire to getaway from the corona craziness. Here is what you need to know before you go.

Are you looking for a place to visit where you can A. social distance and B. not have to take a plane to get there (but you totally could, if you wanted to, no judgement.)? Well I found the place for you! Getaway House is a company that has many locations across the US.

You can find the complete list of locations here. See if there is a getaway house in your area.

If you are ready to disconnect from the world and instead explore it then I suggest you book your stay at a Getaway House.

What to know before you go

Before you book your trip, you need to know that this is a true escape. There is no wifi at the locations and you may not have cell reception either. We were able to have cell phone reception but for the most part we kept off of it.

How many people can fit in a house

A total of 4 people can fit inside of a Getaway House. You have the option of getting a 1 bed or 2 bed house. When you book a 2 bed house it will look similar to the one we stayed at with bunk style beds. It fits 2 adults and 2 kids comfortably.

What’s included in you Getaway House

You may be wondering what is included in your Getaway House. There are so many things included, I was pleasantly surprised to see that how much it comes with.

You will find a small table with 2 chairs, a 2 burner cooktop, a skillet, and pot, a set of bowls, plates, cups, silverware, and a sink to wash dishes off. We were able to use the cook top to make some pasta that we brought from home. We were also able to make some eggs and sausage for breakfast.

You will also find cutlery, a mini fridge, and some books for you to read. One notable mention is the some extras that you can purchase, such a pour over coffee and other snacks.

There is also AC! Inside there is a bathroom, shower with shampoo and conditioner. They even provide a rechargeable lantern for you to use outdoors.

Each window has shades for you to pull down in the evenings which is amazing for privacy and for also keeping the sunlight out during the day.

Provisions for an extra fee

Your house will provide for you extras as mentioned above. These include coffee which you can boil water from the provided kettle. Pasta, red sauce, swedish fish, jerky, trail mix, hot cereal, and more. The prices range from two quarters to $7.50.

What to do while there

Relax. Getaway. Hike. These are just to name a few. If you run out of ideas in your outpost you will find a guide with different things to do. You can stargaze, go for a hike, play tic tac toe, read a book, make s’mores, build a campfire, and much more.

There are hiking trails at each campground. They also make it easy for you and tag the trees so that you can find your way back and not get lost in the woods. I can’t say this is true for all campgrounds but it was true for ours.

We were able to relax, go on hiking a few times, build a fire, and hang out. I was so relaxing and good for the soul. After quarantining for more than a month, it was the best for us mentally. You don’t seem to realize how important the little things are until they are taken away.

I brought along a word search book that I picked up from the dollar store. For the kids, we brought activity books and let them back a small backpack with their favorite small toys. We also had their tablets for the car ride there. We listened to the local radio stations and cuddled a lot.

Is it pet-friendly?

Have furry friends you want to bring along? You are in luck! For an extra fee you can bring your pets with you. At the house you will find provide dog bowls. They do ask that your sweet pets paws be clean of dirt or mud upon entering the house. We were able to bring our little pup peanut along with us. At the campsite, we found bowls for food and water and a long cord with a hook at the end to tie up pup so they don’t roam far.

Can I play music at my campsite?

There are other cabins nearby and you may run into your neighbors but overall you are secluded to your own campsite. That being said they do value quietness. In order to keep the peace and quiet they ask that no music is played outdoors. It is all about the experience of getting away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and out in the woods for some peace and quiet.

That being said they do have a FM radio inside of your cabin for music and they provide a list of the local radio stations for your convenience.

It is so peaceful and quiet. The perfect place to getaway and relax in the hill country.

What to pack

  • Pack a good book to read.

This is the woods so be prepare to see different types of insects and bugs. Oh boy, we saw a few really big spiders outside. Naturally, this is a normal part of camping, but just a heads up for my fashionistas.
